Level 4 mage armor in RuneScape: Dragonwilds includes Dark Mage Robes and Dragonkin Mage Robes. Both robe pieces provide identical defenses and are crafted at the Armour Bench. Your choice depends on recipe access and materials: Dark Mage Robes require silver bars, while Dragonkin Mage Robes require gold bars.
How to unlock level 4 mage robes
The RuneScape: Dragonwilds Wiki lists Padded Cloth and the Mystic Forge as the discovery requirements for Dark Mage Robes. Obtaining padded cloth is therefore an important progression step, but check the Mystic Forge requirement too if the recipe remains unavailable.
For Dragonkin Mage Robes, find the recipe inside Chaktan Kara, a dragonkin vault. The Dragonkin Mage Robes wiki entry identifies this specific vault as the recipe location. Unlocking these robes involves finding their recipe rather than simply collecting the crafting ingredients.
Both items are made at the Armour Bench. Older YouTube tutorials show the Smithing Anvil, but the item histories on the RuneScape: Dragonwilds Wiki record a station change in update 0.12.0 on June 23, 2026, when the Smithing Anvil was removed. The Mystic Forge discovery requirement for Dark Mage Robes should not be confused with their crafting station.

Recipes and defensive stats
The following quantities craft one robe item, not a complete hood, robe, and leg set. The two individual item entries on the RuneScape: Dragonwilds Wiki list these recipes:
| Robe | Padded Cloth | Hard Leather | Metal bars | Vault Shards |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dark Mage Robes | 8 | 8 | 4 Silver Bars | 3 |
| Dragonkin Mage Robes | 6 | 10 | 4 Gold Bars | 3 |
Both robes have power level 4, weigh 8.0 kg, and provide +23 melee defense, +24 ranged defense, and +30 magic defense. Their strongest defensive value is against magic.
Dragonkin Mage Robes offer the same listed defenses as Dark Mage Robes. Their recipe uses two fewer padded cloth and two more hard leather, with gold replacing silver. Choose according to the recipe you have learned and the resources available at your base.
The crafting entries also list 100 Artisan experience. That number is an experience reward, not an Artisan level requirement.
Preparing the materials
Several ingredients require processing before you can craft the robes. The crafting breakdowns on the RuneScape: Dragonwilds Wiki show these production chains:
- Padded Cloth: Combine Rough Cloth and Wool Cloth at a Loom. Rough Cloth comes from Coarse Thread made from flax; Wool Cloth comes from Wool Thread made from fleece.
- Hard Leather: Process Leather with Adhesive at a Tannery. Leather comes from Animal Hide, while Adhesive is made from Swamp Tar at a Kiln.
- Silver or Gold Bars: Smelt the corresponding ore at a Furnace. The four bars required for either robe represent 12 matching ore.
- Vault Shards: Reserve three for the robe recipe, in addition to any shards needed for other equipment.
For Dark Mage Robes, the padded cloth portion requires eight Rough Cloth and eight Wool Cloth. For Dragonkin Mage Robes, it requires six of each. This makes checking your processed cloth stock useful before gathering more raw materials.
Keep the full outfit separate from this shopping list. A hood and robe legs are additional items with their own crafting costs; making the robe does not produce all three pieces.

Magic armor bonuses
Both robe entries list the same Magic armor bonuses. Wearing one Magic armor piece halves the delay before stamina regeneration begins. With two pieces, the listed bonus is +10% magic attack speed; with three, it is +15% magical critical chance.
The stamina effect reduces the waiting period before regeneration starts. It does not mean stamina refills 50% faster.
The Fextralife Magic Armour page lists a hood, robes, and robe legs for both Dark Mage and Dragonkin Mage armor. Plan for those additional slots if you want all three bonus thresholds. A single crafted robe supplies only one equipped piece toward them.
